The two main sects of Islam are Sunni and Shia. Sunni Islam is the largest branch of Islam, with followers making up 87 to 90% of the Muslim global population. The name Sunni derives from the term ahl al-sunna wa-l-jamaa, which means "people of the tradition of Muhammad and the community". Shia Islam, on the other hand, believes that Ali and his descendants are part of a divine order. The term Shia stems from shi’atu Ali, Arabic for "partisans of Ali". Despite their differences, both sects agree on the basic tenets of Islam, such as declaring faith in a monotheistic God and Mohammed as his messenger, conducting daily prayers, giving money to the poor, fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and performing the pilgrimage to Mecca.
