Texas A&M University has a student-led, military-style organization called the Corps of Cadets, which is the oldest student organization on campus and was established with the university in 1876. The Corps of Cadets is a large, visible part of the university and continues to play an important part in Texas A&M’s traditions and history. While participation in the Corps of Cadets was at one time mandatory for all who attended Texas A&M, participation in the Corps became voluntary in 1965. However, membership in the Corps carries no military obligation. The men and women of the Corps of Cadets form the largest uniformed body of students outside of the United States service academies.

The Corps of Cadets is comprised of many units or outfits, each with unique traits and offerings. There are 41 outfits available, and students join an outfit based on their interests, major, and personality. The ceremonial uniform for the Ross Volunteers, which serves as the official Honor Guard of the Governor of Texas, is a very distinctive white uniform with yellow trim, while officers wear a silk red sash around the waist of their uniforms. The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, which is the official marching band of Texas A&M, is also known as the “Noble Men of Kyle” .

It is important to note that not all students at Texas A&M wear military uniforms, only those who are a part of the Corps of Cadets. The Corps of Cadets is a large and diverse program made up of students from all backgrounds and experiences, and academically, cadets study all different majors at Texas A&M and go on to pursue careers in the public and private sectors as well as in the military. The Corps of Cadets has numerous uniforms issued to each cadet, including various versions of the daily, field, and formal uniforms.
