The national anthem of the United States is "The Star-Spangled Banner". The lyrics were written by Francis Scott Key in 1814, inspired by the sight of the American flag flying over Fort McHenry after a battle with British forces during the War of 1812. The lyrics are as follows:

O say can you see, by the dawns early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilights last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
Oer the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
