Tonsils are part of the immune system and are located in the back of the throat. They are like lymph nodes and help filter out germs that enter the body through the nose or mouth. The tonsils contain a lot of white blood cells, which help kill germs. There are different types of tonsils, including the palatine tonsils, adenoids, and lingual tonsil. Together, they form Waldeyers tonsillar ring, which is a key defensive barrier against pathogens entering the body. The main function of tonsils is fighting infection. When tonsils become inflamed, it is known as tonsillitis, which can cause swelling, sore throat, and white spots on the throat. Treatment for inflamed or infected tonsils depends on the underlying cause, and it may include antibiotics, drainage, or tonsil removal. Tonsillectomy is most commonly done in children with frequent tonsil infections, but adults can have tonsillectomies too.
