Trophic levels are steps in a food chain or ecological pyramid where the transfer of food (or energy) takes place from one organism to another. Organisms in a food chain are classified into these levels based on their feeding behavior. There are four trophic levels:

Producers: The first trophic level includes primary producers, such as plants and algae, which produce their own food through photosynthesis.

Primary Consumers: The second trophic level includes herbivores, which are organisms that eat plants.

Secondary Consumers: The third trophic level includes carnivores, which are organisms that eat other animals.

Tertiary Consumers: The fourth trophic level includes predators, which are organisms that eat other carnivores.
An organism may not always occupy the same trophic level, as it can differ based on the food chain. A food chain is a succession of organisms or a stepwise process where organisms eat others and can, in turn, be eaten themselves. The trophic level of an organism is the number of steps it is from the start of the chain.
