Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, are aircraft without any human pilot, crew, or passengers on board. UAVs were originally developed for military use cases, but there are numerous civilian, commercial, military, and aerospace applications for UAVs. UAVs can be fully or partially autonomous and can be piloted remotely. They can carry a lethal or nonlethal payload and can be used for aerial surveillance, filmmaking, journalism, scientific research, surveying, cargo transport, mining, manufacturing, forestry, solar farming, thermal energy, ports, agriculture, and warfare. UAVs can be remarkably efficient, offering substantially greater range and endurance than equivalent manned systems. The complete system includes ground stations and other related support equipment. UAVs can be used to extend the vision of ground combat units beyond their front lines.
