ULEZ cameras are used by Transport for London (TfL) to monitor the cars that enter and exit the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London. The cameras record drivers’ number plates, which then get checked against a database to see if the vehicle complies with ULEZ rules. If it doesn’t, then the drivers get charged a daily fee of £12.50. As of September 2023, there are approximately 2,750 ULEZ cameras placed across London, with 1,775 cameras already installed. The cameras are on constantly, operating 24 hours a day and seven days a week, except Christmas Day. While the cameras aren’t able to cover all entrances and exits in the ULEZ zone, TfL hasn’t disclosed which ones these are. Certain entrances and exits in the ULEZ zone are not monitored by cameras, but these locations have not been disclosed. The ULEZ cameras work by scanning a vehicles number plate and checking if it is compliant or not within the low emission zone. It will then see if the driver has prepaid the charge or not. The ULEZ cameras are also used for enforcing other road user charging schemes, such as the Congestion Charging Zone and Low Emission Zone.
