Weevils are small beetles with elongated snouts. They are usually less than 6 mm in length and herbivorous. There are approximately 97,000 known species of weevils, with most of them belonging to the family Curculionidae. Weevils can be found in gardens, fields, and stored food products. Some common types of weevils that infest pantries and cupboards are rice weevils, granary or wheat weevils, and maize weevils. Weevils can multiply quickly and spread throughout the kitchen. The female weevil chews a hole into a seed or grain kernel and deposits an egg inside. Then, she seals up the opening, leaving the egg behind. When the egg hatches, the larva feeds on the food item until it is fully grown. Many weevils are considered pests because of their ability to damage and kill crops. The boll weevil attacks cotton crops, while the grain or wheat weevil damages stored grain, among others. Weevils are not harmful to humans, pets, houses, or buildings. To prevent weevils from entering homes, it is best to caulk cracks and ensure snug-fitting screens and doors.
