A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more is classified as obese for most adults. The BMI ranges are as follows:
- Underweight: less than 18.5
- Healthy weight: 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: 25 to 29.9
- Obese: 30 to 39.9
- Severely obese: 40 or above
For people with Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African, or African- Caribbean backgrounds, the obese range starts at a BMI of 27.5 or above. Thus, generally, a BMI of 30 or greater is considered obese.
