Fasting is a dietary practice where people voluntarily avoid consuming food or drink containing calories for a set period. Consuming any calories breaks a fast. However, some foods and drinks are less likely to affect fasting periods than others. Here are some examples of what breaks a fast:
-
Foods and drinks that contain calories: Any food or drink containing any meaningful amount of energy will break a fast. This includes soups that contain protein and easily digestible carbs, such as lentils, tofu, or pasta, soups made with heavy cream or a large amount of oil, bone broth, and coffee containing MCT oil, ghee, coconut oil, or butter.
-
Supplements: Some supplements, such as branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), EAAs, and collagen, contain calories and would break a fasted state. Additionally, some supplements and drinks may break a fast depending on whether they contain certain ingredients, including sugar.
When youre ready to break your fast, its best to ease out of it. Toward the end of your fast, you might want to introduce small portions of foods that are more easily digested, so you don’t overwhelm your digestive system.
