Orange cats are not a specific breed of cat, but rather a coat color that can be found in many different breeds. Orange coats can be long, short, striped (tabby or mackerel patterned), tortoiseshell, or calico. In fact, all orange cats are tabbies, but not all tabbies are orange. The gene responsible for orange and red coat color is found on the X chromosome and comes in two versions: dominant (O) and recessive (o). The dominant O gene will produce orange coloration; the recessive o gene will not. Male cats only need one X chromosome to get the orange color, while females need two X chromosomes to have an orange coat. Therefore, it is more common to see male orange cats than female orange cats. Some breeds that can have orange coats include American Curl, American Shorthair, British Shorthair, Cornish Rex, Devon Rex, Abyssinian, Bengal, Maine Coon, and Egyptian Mau.
