The day before a colonoscopy, you should only consume clear liquids. Here are some examples of what you can eat and drink:
Clear Liquids You Can Consume:
- Water
- Clear broth
- Clear fruit juice (without pulp)
- Clear soda (such as ginger ale)
- Coffee or tea (without cream or nondairy creamer)
- Gelatin desserts (without fruit or topping)
Foods to Avoid:
- Alcoholic beverages
- Milk
- Smoothies
- Milkshakes
- Cream
- Orange juice
- Grapefruit juice
- Tomato juice
It is important to stay hydrated by drinking lots of clear liquids, such as sports drinks, clear juice like apple and white grape, and clear broth. You can have gelatin and ice pops, but stay away from anything colored red, blue, or purple. The dyes can discolor the lining of the colon and make it harder for the doctor to see. Additionally, you should not eat any solid food until after your colonoscopy.
