Here are some ways to unclog a toilet without using a plunger:
-
Baking soda and vinegar: Pour one cup of baking soda and one cup of vinegar down the toilet drain. The mixture will fizz for a while, which may be all it takes to break down the clog.
-
Hot water and dish soap: Pour about a half-cup of dish soap into the toilet. The slippery soap should help lubricate the clogged pipe and allow the lodged debris to slide down more easily. If you’re out of dish soap, chop a bar of hand soap into small chunks and drop the pieces into the toilet. Then pour hot water into the toilet bowl from waist height. The force of the water can help break up the clog.
-
Plastic bottle: Insert an empty plastic bottle upside down into the drain of the blocked toilet and squeeze firmly and fast. The air will force into the pipes and disrupt the clog.
-
Wire hanger: Uncoil a wire hanger and use it to break up the clog. Be careful not to scratch the porcelain.
-
Toilet auger: Use a toilet auger, also called a plumbing snake, to extend into pipes and clear obstructions without damaging the plumbing. Feed the end of the cable into the toilet, taking care not to scratch the bowl.
-
Baking soda and vinegar: Measure one cup of baking soda and pour it into the toilet. Then, pour two cups of white vinegar onto the baking soda to create a chemical reaction that fizzes. As it fizzes and circulates in the bowl, you may see the water level drop which indicates that the blockage is clearing.
-
Force airflow: Use a wet/dry vacuum to suck out the clog. Cover the vent hole with a plunger and turn on the vacuum. The suction can help dislodge the clog.
Remember to avoid flushing the toilet repeatedly, as this can cause the water to overflow.
