Pregnant women can safely take acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) to treat occasional headaches. However, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider before taking any medication, including herbal treatments. To prevent or relieve mild headaches during pregnancy without taking medication, pregnant women can try the following:
- Rest
- A neck or scalp massage
- Hot or cold packs
- Reduce stress levels
If a headache is severe, persistent, or just doesn’t go away, or when there is dizziness, blurred vision, or changes in the field of vision, it is important to contact a healthcare provider. Headaches can sometimes be related to blood pressure problems in pregnancy, and if they are persistent or severe and happen after 20 weeks of pregnancy, it is important to let a healthcare provider know.
