California has recently banned the sale of candies that contain four food additives that are thought to be harmful. The newly signed California Food Safety Act bans the use of brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propylparaben, and red dye 3 in any food product manufactured, sold, delivered, distributed, held, or offered for sale in California after January 1, 2027. However, it is important to note that Skittles are not banned in California, despite initial reports that the law would ban them. The law affects around 12,000 other candies, cereals, and sodas, including Peeps and most grocery store-made red velvet cupcakes. Manufacturers will need to change their products recipes by 2027 to legally sell them in the state. The use of the banned chemicals has already been banned in the European Union and many other countries due to scientific research linking them to significant health harms, including cancer, reproductive issues, and behavioral and developmental issues in children.
