The Patel community is a caste or clan title predominantly found in the state of Gujarat, India, representing the community of land-owning farmers and later businessmen, agriculturalists, and merchants. The Patel community is divided into various sub-castes, including the Leuvas and the Kadwas, which claim to be descendants of Lord Rams sons Luv and Kush, respectively. The Leva Patidar (Leuva Patidar) is a sub-caste of Patidars in India, situated mainly in the Charotar region of Gujarat. The Patels of Gujarat were largely mobilized and politically active during the Indian freedom movement due to the presence of leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi in the region, and Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel from the community. After Independence, this translated into a mobilization for better positions. The Patel community was largely engaged in agriculture and related activities. The Patels are peasants, from the same grouping as all the other peasant castes, like Patils, Reddys, Yadavs, Gowdas, and Jats, and come from the lowest of the four savarna or recognized castes, called shudra in Manusmriti.
