Astigmatism is a common eye problem that can make your vision blurry or distorted. It occurs when either the front surface of the eye (cornea) or the lens inside the eye has mismatched curves, causing blurred vision at all distances. Astigmatism is often present at birth and may occur in combination with nearsightedness or farsightedness. Doctors dont know what causes astigmatism, but genetics is a big factor. Its often present at birth, but it may develop later in life. It may also occur as a result of an injury to the eye or after eye surgery. Symptoms of astigmatism may include blurry vision, needing to squint to see clearly, headaches, eye strain, and trouble seeing at night. If you have mild astigmatism, you might not notice any symptoms. Astigmatism is easily diagnosed by a standard eye exam with refraction test. Treatment options for astigmatism include corrective lenses or surgery.
