Hip bursitis is the inflammation of one of the hips bursae, which are fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones, tendons, and muscles near the joints. The most common cause of hip bursitis is repetitive motions or positions that put pressure on the bursae around a joint, such as throwing a baseball or lifting something over your head repeatedly, leaning on your elbows for long periods, or extensive kneeling for tasks such as laying carpet or scrubbing floors. Other causes of hip bursitis include injury or trauma to the affected area, inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and infection. Some factors that increase the likelihood of bursitis include overuse/repeated pressure on the hip, being significantly overweight, and having other medical conditions such as diabetes or spine problems.
