Ovarian cysts are common growths that develop on or inside the ovaries. Most of the time, they are harmless and go away without treatment. However, sometimes they can cause complications that require medical attention. There are several types of ovarian cysts, but the most common are functional cysts, which are linked to the menstrual cycle and occur as a result of ovulation. Other causes of ovarian cysts include:

  • Pathological cysts: These are caused by abnormal cell growth and are not related to the menstrual cycle. They can develop before and after menopause.

  • Endometriosis: This is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. It can cause cells to attach to the ovary and form a cyst.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): This is a condition that causes multiple cysts on the ovaries and can make it hard to get pregnant.

  • Pregnancy: Sometimes, the follicle that forms when you ovulate stays on your ovary throughout pregnancy and can grow larger.

  • Severe pelvic infection: If the infection spreads to the ovaries, it can cause cysts.

Most ovarian cysts cause no symptoms and go away on their own. However, a large ovarian cyst can cause pain, pressure, bloating, swelling, or pain in one side of your lower belly. If you experience sudden, severe belly pain, pain with fever and throwing up, dizziness, weakness, or feeling faint, you should see a doctor right away as these could be signs of a serious complication.
