Ear infections in adults are typically caused by bacteria or viruses in the middle ear. These infections often result from another illness such as a cold, flu, or allergy that causes congestion and swelling of the nasal passages, throat, and Eustachian tubes. Some common causes of ear infections in adults include:
- Allergies
- Cold
- Flu
- Sore throat
- Respiratory infection
Fluid and mucus can build up in the middle ear after the infection goes away, leading to a condition called otitis media with effusion. Adults can also develop inner ear infections, which can occur due to a virus such as influenza, herpes zoster oticus, or Epstein-Barr. Some people with chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema may be more prone to ear infections. Symptoms of ear infections in adults can include inflammation, pain, tenderness, hearing changes, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fever, headache, and swelling of the ear. If a person suspects they have an ear infection, they should seek medical assistance. Treatment may include managing pain, monitoring the problem, and sometimes antibiotics.
