Epididymitis is an inflammation of the epididymis, which is a coiled tube at the back of the testicle that stores and carries sperm. The most common cause of epididymitis is a bacterial infection, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhea or chlamydia. Other causes of epididymitis include:
- Blockage in the urethra (the tube that carries pee from your bladder)
- Urine flowing backward into the epididymis
- Viral infections, such as the mumps virus
- Tuberculosis
- Taking high doses of amiodarone, a medicine used to treat heart rhythm disorder
- Groin injury
- Behçets disease
Sometimes, the cause of chronic epididymitis isnt able to be found. It is important to see a doctor if you experience scrotal pain or swelling, as this can be caused by a number of conditions, some of which need treatment right away to avoid permanent damage.
