Earwax is produced inside the ears to keep them clean and free of germs. It usually passes out of the ears harmlessly, but sometimes too much can build up and block the ears. The following are some of the causes of excess earwax:

• Frequent use of objects in the ear canal: Earwax can also block your ear if you frequently insert objects into your ear canal, such as cotton buds, ear plugs or hearing aids. This can damage your ear and push the wax further down.

• Genetics: Everyone makes earwax, but the amount and type are genetically determined just like hair color or height.

• Age: As people age, their earwax tends to become drier and harder, making it more difficult to move out of the ear canal.

• Hairy or narrow ear canals: People with hairy or narrow ear canals may be more prone to earwax buildup.
