Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, is a condition where a person sweats more than necessary to regulate body temperature. While sweating is a necessary bodily function, excessive sweating can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Primary hyperhidrosis: This type of hyperhidrosis causes excessive sweating in the hands, underarms, face, and feet without any apparent reason. Doctors arent sure why people have primary hyperhidrosis, although it may be inherited. This form of hyperhidrosis affects about 1% to 3% of the population, and usually starts in childhood or adolescence.

  • Secondary hyperhidrosis: This type of hyperhidrosis causes excessive sweating all over the body or in a larger area of the body and can be caused by excessive heat as well as a medical condition or medication. Certain problems such as diabetes, heart failure, anxiety, and overactive thyroid can cause heavy sweating. Some drugs may also cause heavy sweating as a side effect.

  • Menopause: Hormonal changes in women caused by menopause is another possible cause of excessive sweating.

It is important to note that excessive sweating can also be a symptom of an underlying medical condition, such as endocarditis, leukemia, lymphoma, malaria, or hyperthyroidism. If you experience heavy sweating with dizziness, pain in the chest, throat, jaw, arms, shoulders or throat, or cold skin and a rapid pulse, seek immediate medical attention. Otherwise, see your healthcare provider if sweating is interfering with your life or if you have concerns about excessive sweating.
