Inguinal hernias in babies occur when part of the intestine pushes through an opening in the abdominal wall through the inguinal canal. The inguinal canal extends from the babys abdomen to their genitals. Inguinal hernias look like a bulge or swelling in the groin or scrotum, which may be more noticeable when the baby cries and may get smaller or go away when the baby relaxes. The main symptom of an inguinal hernia in a child is a bulge that can be seen under the skin in their groin or scrotum, which may come and go. In most cases, hernias are not preventable. The following are some of the causes of inguinal hernias in babies:

• Weakness in the abdominal wall: Openings in the abdominal wall are normal in babies, and they typically close before or right after birth. However, if the opening doesnt close completely, it can cause a hernia.

• Developmental issues: When a baby boy is growing in the womb, the testicles first grow in his belly. As the fetus develops, their testicles travel down a tunnel into the scrotum. Occasionally, the tunnel does not close, leaving an opening from the belly into the inguinal canal, where a piece of bowel or an ovary can become trapped.

• Increased pressure in the belly: Straining and crying dont cause hernias, but the increased pressure in the belly can make a hernia more easily seen.

If an inguinal hernia is not treated, it can cause serious problems, and rare but serious complications can develop if the baby doesnt receive treatment. Surgery is usually required to correct the hernia, and it is usually an outpatient procedure, so the baby should be able to go home the same day.
