Lymphedema is a condition that causes tissue swelling due to an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that is usually drained through the bodys lymphatic system. It most commonly affects the arms or legs, but can also occur in the chest wall, abdomen, neck, and genitals. The main symptom of lymphedema is swelling in all or part of a limb or another part of the body, which can be difficult to fit into clothes, and jewelry and watches can feel tight.

The most common causes of lymphedema include cancer treatments that remove or damage lymph nodes, any type of problem that blocks the drainage of lymph fluid, and inherited conditions in which the lymphatic system doesnt develop properly. Other causes of lymphedema include infections, injury, inflammation of the limb, lack of limb movement, and venous diseases that affect the flow of blood through the veins.

If left untreated, lymphedema can lead to skin changes and breakdown, skin infections, and sepsis, and severe cases can affect the ability to move the affected limb. Treatment may include compression bandages, massage, compression stockings, sequential pneumatic pumping, careful skin care, and, rarely, surgery to remove swollen tissue or to create new drainage routes. It is important to make an appointment with a doctor if you notice persistent swelling in your arm or leg, or if you have already been diagnosed with lymphedema and there is a sudden dramatic increase in the size of the involved limb.
