Nasal congestion, also known as a stuffy nose, occurs when something irritates the tissues lining the inside of your nose, causing inflammation, swelling, and mucus production. The most common causes of nasal congestion are minor illnesses such as colds, flu, and sinus infections. Other causes include allergies, hay fever, and exposure to irritants in the air such as tobacco smoke, perfume, and dust. Nasal congestion can also be a symptom of chronic sinusitis, which occurs when the sinuses are swollen and inflamed.
Some common signs and symptoms of nasal congestion include a stuffy or runny nose, sinus pain, mucus buildup, and swollen nasal tissue. Home remedies such as using a humidifier to add moisture to the air, propping your head up on pillows, and drinking plenty of fluids can help alleviate nasal congestion caused by minor illnesses. However, if nasal congestion lasts for more than a week or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat, it may be a sign of an infection and medical treatment may be necessary.
