Gotham City is a fictional city appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, best known as the home of the superhero Batman/Bruce Wayne and his allies and enemies. Gotham City is traditionally depicted as being located in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The citys look and atmosphere was primarily influenced by New York City. However, Christopher Nolans Gotham City was deliberately set in New Jersey to honor Gothams location in the comic books. In addition, there have been many different theories as to where Gotham City was in relation to present-day maps, but according to the book Atlas of the DC Universe, released in 1990 by Mayfair Games to accompany its DC Heroes role-playing game, Gotham is located in the southern part of the state, down in Cumberland County.
