Egypt is a transcontinental country, meaning that it has territory on more than one continent. The majority of Egypt is located on the African continent, including all of its major cities. The northeastern corner of Africa is where Egypt is situated, bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Gaza Strip of Palestine and Israel to the northeast, the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south, and Libya to the west. The Gulf of Aqaba in the northeast separates Egypt from Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The Sinai Peninsula, which is a small portion of Egypt, is situated in Western Asia (Middle East) . The Suez Canal runs through the middle of Egypt and serves as the dividing line between the two continents.
