Japan is the country that is most famous for sushi. Sushi is Japans most well-known cuisine and has become wildly popular worldwide over the last century. The concept of sushi was likely introduced to Japan in the ninth century and became popular there as Buddhism spread. The Japanese are credited with first preparing sushi as a complete dish, eating the fermented rice together with the preserved fish. Sushi began becoming more popular again in the United States a few years after the conclusion of World War II, when Japan once again became open for international trade, tourism, and business. In the 1960s, this trend began to take hold in America in earnest, and middle-class Americans began trying sushi for themselves – and loving it. Nowadays, sushi is easy to find in many countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, Singapore, Thailand, and Australia.
