Italy is a country located in Southern and Western Europe. It is a peninsula that juts deep into the Mediterranean Sea and is surrounded by several islands. Italy shares land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, and the enclaved microstates of Vatican City and San Marino. It also has a territorial exclave in Switzerland (Campione) and an archipelago in the African Plate (Pelagie Islands) . The country covers an area of 301,340 km² (116,350 sq mi) and has a population of nearly 60 million. Its capital and largest city is Rome. Italy is a member of the European Union and is considered a part of Western Europe.
