Jerusalem is located in the Middle East, on a plateau in the Judaean Mountains between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea. Both Israelis and Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital, but the international community does not recognize Israels annexation of East Jerusalem and regards it as Palestinian territory occupied by Israel. Israel maintains its primary governmental institutions in Jerusalem, including the Knesset (Israels parliament), the residences of the Prime Minister and President, and the Supreme Court. However, no country in the world, except for the US and Russia, recognizes Jerusalem as Israels capital. Most countries support that Jerusalem should be the future capital of both Israel and Palestine.
