Medjugorje is a small town located in the municipality of Čitluk, in the southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is about 20 km (12 mi) east of the border with Croatia in an overwhelmingly ethnically Croatian area. The village is located at the base of two hills, Križevac and Podbrdo (also called Apparition Hill). The name Međugorje means “among the mountains”. The parish of Medjugorje is responsible for the villages of Bijakovići, Vionica, Miletina, and Šurmanci. The town has a population of about 4,000 inhabitants, mainly of Croatian ethnicity and of Catholic religion. Medjugorje has become a popular site of Catholic pilgrimage since 1981, due to Our Lady of Medjugorje, a purported series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six local children that are supposedly still happening to this day.
