The official currency of Mexico is the Mexican Peso (MXN) . It is subdivided into 100 centavos. Mexican banknotes have six denominations: $20, $50, $100, $200, $500, and $1,000, while Mexican coins come in 10 denominations: 5¢, 10¢, 20¢, and 50¢, as well as $1, $2, $5, $10, and $20. The US Dollar is also widely accepted across Mexico, especially in the more touristic places like Playa del Carmen. However, it is important to be careful of the exchange rate, as paying in dollars should be somewhere between 17-20 pesos to the dollar (January 2019) . If the rate is 16 or below, it is better to pay in pesos. ATMs are available in most places in Mexico and are reliable and open 24/7. Visa and Mastercard are commonly accepted as part of the Cirrus and Plus global networks. Most Mexican banks charge a transaction fee to withdraw Mexico currency from a non-Mexican account, so it is better to take out large sums of money from ATMs than lots of little withdrawals.
