World Teachers Day is celebrated annually on October 5th to celebrate the work of teachers around the world. It was established in 1994 to commemorate the signing of a recommendation by the International Labour Organization and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) . The day aims to focus on "appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world" and to provide an opportunity to consider issues related to teachers and teaching. UNESCO and Education International (EI) mount a campaign each year to help give the world a better understanding of teachers and the role they play in the development of students and society. The campaign focuses on different themes for every year, and the 2023 World Teachers Day theme is "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage".
