After killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel on July 11, 1804, Aaron Burr went home and had breakfast. Burr hoped that winning the duel would reinvigorate his stagnant political career, but instead, he was charged with two counts of murder. Although he was indicted, Burr was not arrested and was able to serve the remainder of his term as vice president. However, the public sentiment turned against him, and his political career was effectively over. In his later years, Burr was financially dependent on his friends and suffered multiple strokes that ultimately left him partially paralyzed. He died in 1836.
