Helmut Marko initially accused Kimi Antonelli of deliberately letting Lando Norris overtake him in the closing laps of the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, then later backtracked and apologised, saying it was actually a driving mistake and not intentional.

Initial accusation

• After the race, Marko claimed that Antonelli had effectively “waved” Norris by, calling the overtake “so obvious” and suggesting the Mercedes rookie had helped Norris in the title fight rather than defending properly.

• He also pointed to an earlier phase of the race, saying Antonelli had not defended hard enough against Oscar Piastri, reinforcing his belief that Antonelli had allowed rivals through too easily.

Later clarification and apology

• Following a review of the race footage and a major backlash, Marko said that on the first occasion Antonelli could perhaps have defended better, but on the second occasion it was simply a driving error, not a deliberate move to let Norris past.

• Marko apologised for the criticism and abuse Antonelli received online, stressing that Antonelli did not let Norris through on purpose and expressing regret that his comments contributed to the wave of hate directed at the young driver.
