Jeffrey Archer, a millionaire author and former member of the House of Lords, was imprisoned from 2001 to 2003 for perjury and perverting the course of justice. He was found guilty of lying and cheating in his 1987 libel case against the Daily Star, where he created false diaries and concocted a bogus story to win the trial over whether he had slept with a prostitute to whom he paid $3,500 in hush money. He claimed at the time that he had never met her, and the case ended up in court because he sued the newspaper carrying the report, The Daily Star, and obtained an $800,000 libel judgment. Lord Archer was found guilty on two counts of perjury and two of perverting the course of justice.
