Michael Vick, a former NFL quarterback, went to jail for his involvement in a dog fighting ring. He was arrested in 2007 and pleaded guilty to bankrolling the dogfighting operation on his 15-acre property in rural Virginia, helping kill pit bulls that did not perform well in test fights, and providing money for bets on the fights. He was sentenced to 23 months in federal prison for running a "cruel and inhumane" dogfighting ring and lying about it. Vick served his sentence in federal prison and was released in 2009. He also served additional time due to breaking the conditions of his parole. After his release, he was reinstated into the NFL as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles and later joined the New York Jets.
