During the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin explored the surface of the moon for about 2 hours and 36 minutes, collecting 48.5 pounds (22 kilograms) of material from the surface, including 50 moon rocks, and deploying experiments. The samples they brought back to Earth provided a wealth of information about the moons formation and evolution, as well as insights into the early days of the solar system and the formation of the Earth. The rocks collected were dominated by unusual high-titanium basalt lava flows, not unmelted primitive lunar material as one school of thought claimed. Scientists also discovered trace amounts of water in some Apollo moon rocks, including some from Apollo 11, decades after the samples arrived on Earth. Therefore, Neil Armstrong did not discover anything specific on the moon, but his mission contributed significantly to our understanding of the moon and the solar system.
