In 2010, Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice posted a homophobic slur on Twitter after the Wallabies last-gasp win over South Africa. She tweeted, "Suck on that ... faggots!". Rice later apologized and deleted the tweet, but the comment attracted criticism from gay actor and former Australian rugby league star Ian Roberts, who labeled Rice a "complete idiot". Luxury car maker Jaguar also cut its sponsorship of Rice, a triple Olympic gold medalist, after she sent the tweet using an anti-gay slur. Rice held an emotional press conference where she apologized for her "huge error of language and judgment" and offered a wrenching apology to those offended by her tweet. Fellow Australian and Olympic diving champion Matthew Mitcham, who is openly gay, came to Rices defense, condemning her as thoughtless rather than homophobic.
