Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th President of the United States, serving from 1901 to 1909. He was the youngest person to become president of the United States, assuming the presidency at age 42. During his presidency, he brought new excitement and power to the office, vigorously leading Congress and the American public toward progressive reforms and a strong foreign policy. Some of his most effective achievements were in conservation, where he added enormously to the national forests in the West, reserved lands for public use, and fostered great irrigation projects. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating the Russo-Japanese War, reached a Gentleman’s Agreement on immigration with Japan, and sent the Great White Fleet on a goodwill tour of the world. Roosevelt was a leader of the progressive movement and championed his "Square Deal" domestic policies, which called for fairness for all citizens, breaking of bad trusts, regulation of railroads, and pure food and drugs. He also expanded the powers of the executive office and functioned as a moderate Progressive, effecting legislation which was pro-environment, supporting labor, and "trust-busting" more than 40 holding companies during his terms in office.
