Armadillos carry Hansens disease, also known as leprosy, which is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae. In the southern United States, some armadillos are naturally infected with the bacteria that cause Hansens disease, and it may be possible for them to spread it to people. Armadillos are the only animals, besides humans, that can carry M. leprae. The risk of getting Hansens disease from armadillos is very low, but it is still recommended to avoid contact with them whenever possible. Symptoms of Hansens disease include discolored patches of skin, lesions, growths on the skin, paralysis or disfigurement of the hands and feet, and blindness. In addition to Hansens disease, armadillos can also carry other diseases such as rabies. It is important to take precautions when handling armadillos, such as wearing gloves when cleaning the carcass and cooking the meat until it is well-done.
