If a draft is authorized in the United States, not all citizens will be eligible for military service. Here are some reasons why someone may be disqualified from being drafted:

  • Obesity: The Pentagon limits how many candidates from Category IV, the lowest category based on education and AFQT scores, the services can recruit. This means that if there is a draft, those recruits wont make it into the Air Force or Coast Guard, the branches of service with the highest minimum ASVAB and education standards.

  • Education: Those who fall into Category IV based on education and AFQT scores may not be eligible for military service.

  • Criminal Records: Those with criminal records may not be eligible for military service.

  • Health Problems: Certain medical conditions may disqualify someone from joining the military, such as anemia, hemorrhagic disorders, chronic or recurrent leukopenia, and immunodeficiency. Additionally, those with disabilities that would not qualify for military service are still required to register with Selective Service, but they may be exempt from service in the event of a draft.

  • Drugs: Those who use drugs may not be eligible for military service.

  • Age: Men who are not between the ages of 18 and 26 are exempt from selective service.

  • Conscientious Objector: Men who would be classified as conscientious objectors if they were drafted must register with Selective Service, but they may be exempt from service in the event of a draft.

Its important to note that just because someone is registered with Selective Service does not mean they will automatically have to serve in the military if a draft is reinstated. If someone has a physical or mental condition that keeps them from serving, that will be decided after they are drafted. Additionally, claiming conscientious objector status may allow someone to serve in non-combat positions or not serve in the military at all.
