Cheetahs are carnivores and eat mostly small to medium-sized animals such as gazelles, impalas, and springbok. They also hunt the young of larger animals such as warthogs, kudu, hartebeest, oryx, roan, and sable. When food supplies are short, they will hunt small animals like birds and rabbits. Asiatic cheetahs, which live in desert regions, consume goitered gazelles, wild goats, and chinkara. In captivity, cheetahs are often fed beef or meat from other animals such as rabbits, chickens, and donkeys. Adult cheetahs eat about 6.2 lb. (2.8 kg) of meat per day.
