Chia seeds grow into a flowering plant called Salvia hispanica, which is a member of the mint family. The chia plant is an annual herb that grows freely in warm zones and is native to Mexico and Guatemala. During the blooming period, it has purple flowers. Chia plants are very low-care once established, and their flowers form on spikes that resemble wheat, on stalks that can grow up to five feet tall. Chia seeds are easy to harvest from slightly dried flower heads.
