Environmental scientists use their knowledge of the natural sciences to protect the environment and human health. They study the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the environment to identify and monitor hazards, develop restoration plans, and monitor the process. Environmental scientists work in offices, laboratories, and may spend time in the field gathering data and monitoring environmental conditions firsthand. They may also advise lawmakers and other influential figures in public policy on what to do regarding environmental hazards. Environmental scientists need at least a bachelor’s degree in a natural science or science-related field for most entry-level jobs. The median annual wage for environmental scientists and specialists was $76,480 in May 2022. Employment of environmental scientists and specialists is projected to grow 6 percent from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations. Environmental scientists will continue to be needed to help analyze problems and develop solutions with the environmental impact and public health in mind.
