Hornworms are large caterpillars that belong to the moth family Sphingidae. They are notable for their horns and the uncommonly large size of many of the species. The most widely recognized hornworms are those that feed on tomatoes – the tomato hornworm and the tobacco hornworm. Both caterpillars turn into large moths with four- to six-inch wingspans in colors ranging from brown and gold to pink and grey. These adult stages of hornworms are known as sphinx, hawk, or “hummingbird” moths. They often fly during both day and nighttime hours and are frequently mistaken for small hummingbirds due to their sharp wings and hovering flight.
