Hyenas are carnivores with a diet that includes a wide range of animals such as zebras, gazelles, giraffes, wildebeests, antelopes, birds, rabbits, warthogs, snakes, wild dogs, and even lions (weak or cubs). They are skilled hunters capable of taking down prey larger than themselves but also scavenge carcasses left by other predators. Hyenas have powerful jaws that allow them to crush and eat flesh, bones, teeth, and horns, leaving almost nothing uneaten. Different hyena species vary slightly in diet—spotted hyenas hunt more actively, while brown and striped hyenas tend to scavenge more. Hyenas sometimes resort to eating insects, vegetables, and garbage in times of food scarcity. They can consume large amounts of meat at a time and are efficient at digesting bones and organic material in their prey.
