To renew a non-commercial Texas driver license or identification card, you must bring the following documentation to your local driver license office:
- Application for Renewal
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship (if you have not previously provided proof), or Updated Evidence of Lawful Presence
- Proof of Identity
- Proof of Social Security Number
In addition to the above documents, you will be required to pay an issuance fee. If you are under the age of 18, you will have additional requirements which may be found on the Texas Department of Public Safety website.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, to renew your Texas driver license, commercial driver license, motorcycle license, or identification card, you will need to complete the renewal application before arriving at your local driver license office and bring the following documentation:
- Application for the renewal of a driver license or identification card
- U.S. Citizenship (regardless if you have previously presented this information) or, if you are not a U.S. Citizen, evidence of lawful presence
- Identity (Only one primary, secondary, or supporting document is required)
- Social Security Number
- Provide signature for DL or ID
- Provide thumbprints
- Have your picture taken
If you have a valid Texas drivers license, you can renew it up to one year before the expiration date or two years after the expiration date. You can renew your drivers license online, by phone, by mail, or in person. However, if you fit one of the below categories, you will have to renew in person:
- Your license has been expired for more than two years
- Your license has been suspended
- You need to verify your citizenship with the Department of Public Safety (DPS)
If you need to verify your citizenship with the DPS, you will need to bring one of the accepted documents to show citizenship or legal status.
