To renew your drivers license in Kentucky, you have three options: online, by mail, or in person at any Driver Licensing Regional office. Here are the requirements and steps for each option:

Renew Online

  • You can renew your license, motorcycle license, combination driver/motorcycle license, or ID card online up to six months before it expires.
  • To renew online, all personal information listed on your current license or ID must not have changed (name, address, license class) .
  • You will receive the same card version you currently have (i.e., you cannot request a REAL ID if you have a standard license) .
  • Online renewal is only available for select license or ID Card renewals. License or ID card replacements (lost/stolen) cannot be accepted online at this time.
  • Applicants may renew online up to 6 months before the license expiration date or up to one year past the expiration date on your license.
  • Once your application has been approved by the Transportation Cabinet, your credential will be mailed to the address on file.
  • At this time, applicants will receive the same renewal lifespan as their current card.

Renew by Mail

  • You can renew your license by mail.
  • No documentation is required to renew a credential if the information on the current credential is up to date.
  • If you are renewing and updating a name or address on a credential, you will only be required to pay the renewal fee.
  • Applicants may renew by mail up to 6 months before the license expiration date or up to one year past the expiration date on your license.
  • Once your application has been approved by the Transportation Cabinet, your credential will be mailed to the address on file.
  • At this time, applicants will receive the same renewal lifespan as their current card.

Renew in Person

  • You can renew your license in person at any Driver Licensing Regional office.
  • If the driver is under age 21, the license expires 90 days after the drivers 21st birthday. Age 21 and older, the license expires 31 days after the drivers birth date and may be renewed up to six months before the expiration date.
  • No testing is required for persons with expired credentials less than 5 (five) years. Any driver whose credential is expired for more than five (5) years must start over as a new driver.
